In the second of our series of short films for Postcards from the Plot, our project which aims to explore the meaning and importance of allotments, Kanj Nicholas shared one of her favourite Sri Lankan Recipes. The perfect remedy for any allotment gluts, this courgette and spinach Dhal is a lesson in using home grown food to create wonderful meals to connect around the table.
Fresh produce from Kanj's allotment
In the video, Kanj shares her recipe and how-to guide to making the perfect Dhal, with ingredients ranging from mustard seeds and lentils to onions and chillis. Kanj shows her love of allotment grown produce, taking us on its local journey from plot to plate. From the fresh vegetables being picked at her allotment on Compton Road, Wolverhampton to her kitchen, where she creates the dish surrounded by plant life and colour. There certainly aren't many food miles in this dish!
Chopping the hand picked produce
This is a sustainable, vegetarian dish that encapsulates everything good about growing and cooking with your own produce. Love the sound of this wonderful recipe? Watch the video here and give it a go, we'd love to see what you create - one thing we're sure of is that it will be delicious!
